A detailed perspective on New Zealand’s ability to supply
dairy markets in Asia, including market demand, exporting and distribution
mechanisms, company processing, production responses and market
implications. Client used as input to strategic planning.
Pork industry analysis
Review of the world market for pigmeat. Included international
production, consumption, and export trends, an analysis of the
New Zealand meat market including price (real and nominal) and
consumption trends over 10 years, the international feed grain
supply, pigmeat supply dynamics, and the international competitiveness
of the NZ pigmeat industry. Client used to develop strategy.
Deer industry strategy
Assessed critical factors facing the deer industry in New Zealand
and internationally for the Game Industry Board based on an industry
vision of the future. Provided analysis that was used by the Board
to support the vision.
Agriculture sector analysis
Review of the international market
position and prospects for lamb, mutton, beef, wool, dairy products,
venison, velvet, pipfruit,
kiwifruit, and arable cropping industries. Included literature
review on world production, and consumption trends, supported by
industry discussion for verification. Used by client to review
rural loan portfolio spread.
Leather industry – strategy Reference
Worked with the New Zealand Tanners Association, the Leather
and Shoe Research Association (LASRA) and Tradenz to develop a
quality
enhancement programme for hides and skins covering on farm stock
management and primary processing during the slaughter process,
to improve the quality of raw product for leather production.
Horticulture Export Authority (HEA) - review
Reviewed the functions, effectiveness and efficiency of the HEA
for the Ministers of Agriculture and Trade. Recommended a new structure
to overcome the problems identified. Recommended the separation
of statutory functions from contestable business activities. Provided
follow up advice on implementation. Recommendations implemented.
Environment - sustainable agriculture
Literature review of the New Zealand Government’s environmental
policies and their effect on sustainable agriculture; included
a review of all the relevant legislation, acts and regulations
and interpretation of these to identify key issues and set future
policy framework.
Competitive Intelligence Update for NZ Game Industry Board
Nimmo-Bell provided a detailed report focussed on New Zealand’s
major export markets and competitors for each agricultural industry
and included commentary on domestic production. The report covered
the sheepmeat, beef, dairy, wool and forestry sectors as well as
an assessment of the impact on land use change on the deer industry.
The report also included analysis of the competition in the German
protein market (the major volume market for NZ venison).
Economic Farm Surplus Update for NZ GIB Annual Report
Using the Nimmo-Bell in-house Economic Farm Surplus (EFS) models
an assessment on the relative performance of the deer breeding,
dairy and sheep and beef sectors was provided to the Game Industry
Board for both the one year period ending September 1999 and the
longer term (10 years).
Agribusiness Strategy
We assessed the international prospects and future operating
environment for a large rural servicing company. Based on this
analysis, we
developed a strategic framework for business activities encompassing
land use change and assisted with strategy design.
The New Zealand dairy industry
Completed a strategic study for a large overseas importer on
the production potential and future market prospects for dairy
products.
Covered production, processing and marketing and New Zealand’s
response to international demand for major dairy product categories
by global region. Developed models to assess New Zealand’s
ability to respond for four different scenarios of product demand.
Napier wool industry development strategy
Commissioned by the Napier City Council to conduct a scoping
study on the development of wool-related businesses in and around
Napier.
Included a review of world fibre production and usage trends, the
competitive position of New Zealand wool fibres in world markets,
and Napier’s competitive position as a major wool selling
centre. Assessed the competitive position of wool-related cluster
businesses in Hawkes Bay and investigated new opportunities.
The New Zealand beef industry
Reviewed the New Zealand beef industry for a large international
beef importer. Covered N Z production and scale relative to other
major producers, N Z’s competitive position in world beef
markets, the profitability of beef farming compared with other
pastoral land use options, and cattle trading and pricing systems.
Analysed ownership and types of processing plants, consumption
trends, the role of government and industry organisations, major
markets and access issues, and New Zealand industry’s ability
to respond to different demand levels.
Livestock improvement in New Zealand
Researched increased productivity in the New Zealand dairy and
sheep industries over the past 30 years. Covered industry ownership
and farming systems, main breeds, herd classification and evaluation
of dairy cattle, genetic improvement facilities and services, major
research agencies and indicators used to measure flock and herd
improvement. Research was for an international client wishing to
improve livestock performance.
Strategy development
Reviewed the global markets for sheep meat, beef, wool, dairy
products plantation forestry, venison, skins and hides, apples,
kiwifruit,
arable crops and seeds for the directors of a large agribusiness.
Research was used to develop portfolio spread and risk management
strategies, and identify future opportunities for further development.
The pig meat industry
Reviewed pig meat supply options for a large domestic producer
and processor. Researched the world meat market, pork consumption
trends and the competitive position of global producers and exporters.
Analysed the New Zealand meat market and pork’s competitive
position, production and consumption trends, Reviewed world grain
supply and its impact on feed grain prices, pig meat supply dynamics
within New Zealand, strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities,
and analysed the financial implications of future production scenarios.
Reviews of rural sector and outlook
The company carries out regular rural sector reviews for large
financial institutions. Typical reviews include the wool, sheep
meat, beef, dairy, arable, apple, kiwifruit, deer and plantation
forestry industries from market trends in major markets and consequent
implications for processors and exporters, producers and their
financiers. Other studies have included the future viability of
smaller farms, possible changes in land use in the next 5-10 years,
and loan portfolio spread and risk management strategies.
Environmental policies
Reviewed government environmental policies and their effect on
sustainable agriculture. Covered the history of environmental policies
in New Zealand, the move towards polluter pays and user pays, the
Resource Management Act, and regulations and guidelines relating
to environmental protection. Implications for agriculture in general
including water quality, irrigation, and soil conservation, indigenous
and plantation forests arable and processed food crop production
and processing and for the total livestock industry were studied.
Dairy
production and export potential
Researched the current supply situation for a major offshore
importer of dairy products. Assignment included Asian food consumption
and
projections, N Z’s dairy export trends by market, the function
and export strategy of the N Z Dairy Board, its related legislation,
major strategies and brands. Also covered competition from other
dairy exporters, access barriers, current and future production
and processing potential, and potential to supply future Asian
dairy product demand.
Land use change
Reviewed the impact of the conversion of sheep and beef farms
to dairy farming and to forestry, on sheep and cattle numbers
and
on future pastoral farming and wood production trends. Analysed
the economics of the key drivers of changes in land use and
their sustainability.
New Zealand food market
Researched changes in consumption of beef, lamb, mutton, pork,
poultry, fish, dairy products, fruit and vegetables, and
the underlying reasons for changes. Analysed the impact of
changing trends on
producers, processors, distributors and marketers to help
them
adjust strategies. Update this information regularly.
